Brentford Dock and Lock

Brentford Lock and Dock

Brentford Dock and Lock was once a bustling hub on the Grand Union Canal and River Brent. Today, Brentford Lock is a lovely spot for walking and cycling. A 10-minute stroll along the towpath brings you to Thames Lock, the final lock on the Grand Union Canal and the gateway to the River Thames. Alternatively, the opposite direction leads to Syon House and Park.

Be sure to visit the welcome station at Brentford, where volunteers provide information about the local area. As far as I know, the welcome station operates from April to October, typically between 11 AM and 3 PM, but hours may vary.

One of London’s smallest museums, housed in the Grade II Listed Toll House, it is open every Friday and manned by volunteers. This charming little museum offers an intimate glimpse into the history of the waterways.

The tranquil basin at Brentford Lock is perfect for wildlife spotting. You can observe waterbirds such as herons, moorhens, and ducks, providing a serene setting for reflection.

The Grand Union Canal stretches 137 miles from the Thames to Birmingham and passes through scenic countryside, industrial towns, and peaceful villages. It is the longest canal in the system, featuring 158 locks “.
