Heron Square

Heron Square

Initially, there was Heron Court, a small cul-de-sac that Hill Street entered. This site only became Heron Square in the redevelopment designed by Quinlan Terry and completed in 1986. Whilst almost all of the new buildings are a pastiche of former architectural styles, this development sits comfortably in Richmond despite some voracious objections. At the front, on the Riverside, is Hotham House, which now hosts the likes of eBay.

The original Hotham House on this site, built in 1720, fell into disrepair and eventually collapsed in 1960. It was the home of Admiral Sir William Hotham, who fought in the Napoleonic wars and lived there in 1820.

Every Saturday and Sunday, the Square is transformed by Duck Pond Markets into a weekend market for crafts, food, artists (including myself) and fashion.
