The Poppy Factory

This historic building was repurposed over the years and housed various businesses, including Rovex Plastics Limited, a toy manufacturer, from 1950.

The tradition of using poppies as symbols of remembrance and fundraising can be traced back to the World War I poem "In Flanders Fields," penned by John McCrae. The poem’s vivid depiction of poppies growing on the battlefields of Flanders came to symbolize the sacrifices of soldiers. Over time, this idea evolved into the custom of wearing poppies to show support for veterans and their families.

Two influential women, Moina Belle Michael and Anna Guerin, played crucial roles in popularizing poppies for remembrance and fundraising. Their efforts laid the groundwork for the widespread adoption of the poppy as a symbol of support for veterans.

Another significant development in this journey was the establishment of The Poppy Factory in the former Lansdown Brewery. Major George Howson was instrumental in creating this facility, which employed disabled war veterans who manufactured poppies and wreaths for Remembrance Day. The factory offered job opportunities and fostered a sense of community among veterans.

The importance of The Poppy Factory in commemorating veterans' sacrifices has been acknowledged by members of the British royal family, including King Charles III and Queen Elizabeth (later the Queen Mother), who have visited the site.

Over time, The Poppy Factory expanded its mission beyond poppy production. It began assisting veterans in finding meaningful employment opportunities, ensuring continued support for veterans while upholding the Remembrance tradition. The factory's modernization and redevelopment have allowed it to remain in this important cause.

In 2022, The Poppy Factory celebrated its 100th anniversary, a milestone that highlights the organization’s rich history and significant contributions to veterans and their families. The journey of The Poppy Factory is a testament to the enduring spirit of remembrance, support, and community, illustrating how a simple symbol has evolved into a powerful tradition that honours the sacrifices of those who served in times of conflict.
